Science Through Cool Music Videos with They Might Be Giants
Posted by: Meg In: School Stuff
I recently had the pleasure of e-corresponding with John Flansburgh of the popular band They Might Be Giants. I was stoked when he offered to send me a copy of their new Here Comes Science DVD/CD for review. It has been a great hit with my kids with fun animated videos corresponding to science themes including my kids’ favorites: I am a Paleontologist, The Bloodmobile, and My Brother the Ape. This educational DVD Is a great purchase, with catchy songs and videos you can feel good about your kids enjoying. The songs, like most TMBG songs, are high energy and fun, and my kids have enjoyed bouncing wildly around our house to the tunes of this album.
Songs on the album include Science Is Real, Meet The Elements, I Am A Paleontologist w/ Danny Weinkauf, The Bloodmobile, Electric Car w/ Robin Goldwasser, My Brother The Ape, What Is A Shooting Star?, How Many Planets?, Why Does The Sun Shine?, Why Does The Sun Really Shine?, Roy G. Biv, Put It To The Test, Photosynthesis, Cells, Speed And Velocity, Solid Liquid Gas, Here Comes Science, and The Ballad Of Davy Crockett. Each song throws in validated science facts for kids of all ages. For instance, What Is A Shooting Star? clarifies that shooting stars are not stars at all but rather meteors whose friction against the atmosphere creates the heat and light we see and label as shooting stars. Meet The Elements is a bit more advanced describing how elements combine to form more complex substances.
For a taste of what you can enjoy from this album check out this Why Does the Sun Really Shine? video below:
TMBG is doing a great thing making science fun through music. Past educational albums from TMBG include Here Come The ABCs (2005) and Here Come The 123s (2008). Some of the educational music videos from these albums we have enjoyed through the They Might Be Giants Friday Night Family Podcast, an excellent, educational and fun podcast for kids. Both the TMBG podcast and albums have received excellent listener reviews. I recommend supporting TMBG through purchasing one of their DVDs (currently Here Comes Science is available for $10 on Amazon.com!) or if you are lucky enough to live in the right spot you can attend one of their family friendly concerts. Several are currently slated for cities in the US Northeast.
I love products that make education fun, so thanks to They Might Be Giants in providing some great music in the science arena
