Grassroots Movement Reducing Lunchbox Waste

Posted by: Meg In: News

farm-to-school-lunchbox The Laptop Lunches lunchbox has inspired a grassroots movement in Redding, California known as the Healthy Lunch and Lifestyle Project (HELP). The new nonprofit environmental program was founded and is run by Executive Director Bridgette Brick-Wells.

The program aims to create healthy lunches for kids while drastically reducing lunchroom waste. In select schools, they provide a lunch option for school kids to order prepared lunchtime meals in the Laptop Lunches bento box. The program promotes minimally processed foods including whole fruits, vegetables, meats and cheese products. HELP uses locally produced foods from farms maintaining organic, sustainable agricultural practices.

In addition to reducing trash waste, the program minimizes food waste, too. What isn’t eaten is composted. The program has also created a Garden Classroom, teaching kids of the seed to table process of food production. We can only hope a program like this one spreads nationwide!  For more information visit the HELP Website.

Meg, thank you so much for highlighting our project and linking to our website. A friend of mine in Chicago was doing research and came across your site and sent the link to me. Congratulations to you for your efforts and involvement in this movement. We are all making a difference in the way our children eat and think about their food and the way their choices impact our environment. Keep up the great work!!

Healthy Best,
Bridgette

About

I'm Meg, a stay home Mom of 2 interested in promoting healthy, low waste lunches for kids and grownups. I aim to present good recipe ideas for packed lunches and to analyze lunchbox products currently available. I encourage involving your kids in all aspects of food. From gardening, to nutrition, to enjoying recipes and making some up... there is a lot to learn and enjoy. Cooking with kids in the kitchen is both spectacularly messy and fun, and generally well worth the extra cleanup time...
