POM Wonderful Pomegranate Juice: A Drink to Your Health!

Posted by: Meg In: Lunchbox Products

pomegranate-juice POM Wonderful recently spoiled me with a sampling of their 100% Pomegranate Juice, and although I am not a habitual juice drinker, I may have a newfound addiction!  My 6 year old daughter was an instant fan, too.  As usual, my picky 4 year old was not quite as enthralled (too tart, I think…). However, when I diluted the juice 50/50 with water and added some honey, he happily slurped it down.

Though I have recently noticed more pomegranate items coming up in the health food isles and supplements, I was quite surprised to read POM Wonderful’s researched information as well as some of the history and facts of the pomegranate documented on Wikipedia. Most of the POM research was based on patients who drank an 8 oz serving of pomegranate juice per day over the course of 3 months or more.  Improvements in patients could be seen in areas of cardiovascular health, prostate health, and even erectile function… quite a broad array of improvements have been noted!   (For more details read the Health Benefits section at POM’s site).

I am healthy and in my late 30s… and luckily do not have to worry (yet!) about any of the mentioned health issues.  However, I am a big fan of eating and drinking foods high in antioxidants regardless of age, health, and genetic dipomegranate-recipesposition. Pomegranates are super high in antioxidants, and some claim the concentration of polyphenols in pomegranate juice make it “the most potent antioxidant in nature”… wow!  I also like the tart and sweet flavor of pomegranate juice… I find it somewhat similar to Cranberry juice but more diverse and tasty.

In addition to their 100% Pomegranite Juice, POM Wonderful sells 4 other juice flavors  including POM Blueberry, Cherry, Mango, and Tangerine, as well as Pomegranate Tea and POM antioxidant products in pill & liquid form.  (Explore  their website for more info on these products).  To buy, visit their Store Locator–I found that it is stocked in many major grocery store chains including Kroger, Whole Foods, BiLo, Food Lion, etc.  The 100% Pomegranate juice comes in a large 48oz size… I recommend buying this size and refilling smaller bottles for juice on the go or in a lunchbox.

Pomegranates are great to eat as a fruit, too, and kids are especially enthralled with the hundreds of tiny, juicy seeds found within each pomegranate. If you enjoy pomegranate fruit, you should check out the recipe section at POM Wonderful where you can find dozens of great recipes. A couple that look fabulous to me include their Pomegranate, Butter Lettuce and Garbanzo Bean Salad and  French Green Beans With POM, Goat Cheese & Almonds. YUM!  Do you have any favorite pomegranate recipes?

About

I'm Meg, a stay home Mom of 2 interested in promoting healthy, low waste lunches for kids and grownups. I aim to present good recipe ideas for packed lunches and to analyze lunchbox products currently available. I encourage involving your kids in all aspects of food. From gardening, to nutrition, to enjoying recipes and making some up... there is a lot to learn and enjoy. Cooking with kids in the kitchen is both spectacularly messy and fun, and generally well worth the extra cleanup time...
