Love Retro Lunchboxes? Explore this Metal Lunchbox Site

If you have any interest in the retro metal lunchboxes of yesteryear, you should check out Lunch Box Pad. Created by Bryan Los, Lunch Box Pad provides excellent tips on how to buy and preserve vintage lunchboxes and where to get them online.  If you have one around in your attic, you might want to check out his extensive price guide. This inventory of hundreds of lunchboxes lists typical price ranges for vintage lunch boxes in the hundreds up into the thousands. You may just have one of those rare and hard to find lunch boxes going unnoticed!

yogi-lunchboxLos’ obsession with lunchbox collecting didn’t start until the late 1990’s, and began after a random purchase of a 1980 Pac-Man kit.  He writes that after his first retro lunchbox purchase he was hooked: “The lunch box took on a completely new form. This metal box was no longer just a taxi for food, but a piece of fine art.”  He fully appreciates the artist behind the lunchbox, and provides a listing of notable lunchbox artists here.

metal-lunchboxOther interesting segments of the site include a Lunchbox History Time Line and a great guide with Tips on Buying Lunch Boxes On-Line. Do you have a favorite retro lunchbox in your collection?

So glad I found your site. You replied to an article on examiner.com about organizing that I wrote. As I said I’m about to enter the lunches stage of my son’s life. This is a perfect resource. Will post on my site. :) theslickmom.com

Kerry,
Thanks so much for visiting my site, leaving a comment, and particularly for directing your readers over for a look at xobobox.com. I really appreciate it! Any tips and tricks are helpful when you have a kid, so will keep your blog bookmarked for future visits, too :)

I see you live in San Francisco, what a great city! My brother & his wife live there, we love to visit and find it to be such a great city for playing and exploring with kids. I hear the new museum/aquarium in GG park is awesome… can’t wait to see it during our next trip!

Hope to see you back at xobobox again! Take care,
Meg

Are there any companies still making traditional, metal lunchboxes?
It seems all I can find are nylon bagged kits.
I want my child to have the same enjoyment of her own metal lunchbox.

Old Navy sells them right now, for about 6-13$
Not a huge selection but includes boxes from: Marvel Heros, Superman, Hello Kitty, Smurfs, Orange Crush, Dots, and some others I can’t remember off the top of my head.

Cool! Thanks for the heads up regarding Old Navy lunchboxes. The old metal ones definitely bring me back to my 1970s upbringing :)

I confess that this morning, Oct 3, 2012, I did not walk my kids to school for International Walk to School Day. My excuse (not a great one, but at least I have one!) is that my fifth grader is on her Safety Patrol rotation at school, and making it to school at 715 for [...]

About

I'm Meg, a stay home Mom of 3 interested in promoting healthy, low waste lunches for kids and grownups. I aim to present good recipe ideas for packed lunches and to analyze lunchbox products currently available. I encourage involving your kids in all aspects of food. From gardening, to nutrition, to enjoying recipes and making some up... there is a lot to learn and enjoy. Cooking with kids in the kitchen is both spectacularly messy and fun, and generally well worth the extra cleanup time...

If you have an idea for this website or would like to contribute an article to my blog, please contact me! I am also happy to review products if you would like to send me a sample. I am always looking for new information, products, and ideas to keep lunchtime fun and healthy.
