WARMABLES: A Warm N Cozy School Lunch Box

Posted by: Meg In: Lunchbox Products

warmables-kids-lunch-box The WARMABLES kids lunchbox company was started as a family business to promote healthier kids lunches. They aimed to create a lunch container that would provide their kids with a warm, home-cooked meal at school. The company also strives to protect the environment and support the local economy–all great things in my book!

The WARMABLES lunch sets includes the insulated WARMABLES pouch, a BPA-free plastic food storage container, and a cherry pit bag. A cherry pit bag!?!  Evidently an old trick used before the time of modern heating systems, you can heat the cherry pit bag in the microwave, throw it in the lunch bag with the warmed food, and your child will enjoy a warm home cooked meal at school. The lunch container holds up to 16 oz. of food and does not leak.  Depending on the age and appetite of your kids, this may be enough food to send as your kids lunch box and otherwise yoinsulated-lunch-boxu may need to supplement with cheese slices, fruit, yogurt, or similar to be sent separately from the insulated lunch bag.

WARMABLES states that is safe to heat and store meals in their BPA-free container. However, I am weary of heating any foods in plastic containers. There remains great debate on the safety of heating any food in plastic, BPA-free or not, and I like to err on the side of caution. So, when I use our WARMABLES lunchbox, I heat the food in a glass bowl and then I put the warmed food in the plastic lunch container. The microwaved cherry pits have successfully kept the lunch warm till lunchtime and my kids have enjoyed having a warm meal from home at lunchtime.

Still run as a Mom N Pop type shop, the lunch box materials are purchased in the USA and Canada only.  Their website states that WARMABLES will not be produced overseas, therefore supporting the local economy. To support WARMABLES and their local economy purchase one of more of their lunchboxes for $27.95 plus shipping and start sending a healthy warm lunch to school or on the go.

I confess that this morning, Oct 3, 2012, I did not walk my kids to school for International Walk to School Day. My excuse (not a great one, but at least I have one!) is that my fifth grader is on her Safety Patrol rotation at school, and making it to school at 715 for [...]

About

I'm Meg, a stay home Mom of 3 interested in promoting healthy, low waste lunches for kids and grownups. I aim to present good recipe ideas for packed lunches and to analyze lunchbox products currently available. I encourage involving your kids in all aspects of food. From gardening, to nutrition, to enjoying recipes and making some up... there is a lot to learn and enjoy. Cooking with kids in the kitchen is both spectacularly messy and fun, and generally well worth the extra cleanup time...

If you have an idea for this website or would like to contribute an article to my blog, please contact me! I am also happy to review products if you would like to send me a sample. I am always looking for new information, products, and ideas to keep lunchtime fun and healthy.
