You gotta love a company with the slogan “play with your food”! If you are looking for a durable, creative lunchbox for kids, the new Yubo lunchbox is definitely worth consideration. Created with a sharp focus on design, the folks at Yubo produced a lunchbox that meets several great lunch box requirements in a cool way. As lunchbox packing parents themselves, the founders sought a lunch box that is “customizable, interactive, fun, flexible, functional, washable, ecological, colorful, beautiful, and of course, very cool and loaded with personality.”  The resulting Yubo is fun for kids while providing great features for grownups aiming to pack waste-free lunch boxes.

When I first received Yubo to try out, I was impressed with the durable feel and quality of the outer lunchbox. Yubo is obviously made to last using high quality materials.  The lunch box itself was larger than I had expected from the online pictures  at 9.8″ wide x 6.9″ tall x 3.5″ deep.  Yubo can hold plenty of food for kids or grownups, though the overall design seems definitely for kids. The inner containers and icepack also seem to be of high quality plastics–however, based on my lunch packing habits I have mostly used the inner sandwich compartment rather than the smaller side dish sizes.  I have found the smaller round containers to be too small for most of the stuff I like to pack (for instance, only a few strawberries can fit into the small round containers…). However, I like that Yubo is large enough to accommodate whole fruit like apples. A typical lunch I have packed in Yubo includes a sandwich (packed in the Yubo sandwich container), an apple, and some type of treat (we are still making our way through Halloween candy, believe it or not!).

Besides being durable and well-made, one of the best features of Yubo is the ability to personalize the lunchbox in unique ways.  Their interchangeable faceplates give children dozens of lunchbox design choices, and for small upcharges the faceplates may be customized to include names or photos to make a child’s lunchbox truly unique.  This personal touch can give a great sense of pride and ownership to the little ones in our lives. Holes around the edges of Yubo also allow for attaching keychain-style trinkets to further personalize one’s lunchbox.

In terms of safety, Yubo is made of BPA-free, anti-microbial plastic that inhibits the growth of bacteria. Another major plus: all parts are dishwasher safe and recyclable. I find the price of Yubo to be quite reasonable based on the overall quality of the lunchbox. The Standard Yubo (outer lunchbox + choice of faceplate) sells for $21.95, the Deluxe Yubo (includes outer lunchbox + choice of faceplate + three inner containers + custom icepack) sells for $29.95.

All in all, Yubo is a great option for packing waste-free lunches for the younger crowd. If you get one, let me know what you think!

About

I'm Meg, a stay home Mom of 2 interested in promoting healthy, low waste lunches for kids and grownups. I aim to present good recipe ideas for packed lunches and to analyze lunchbox products currently available. I encourage involving your kids in all aspects of food. From gardening, to nutrition, to enjoying recipes and making some up... there is a lot to learn and enjoy. Cooking with kids in the kitchen is both spectacularly messy and fun, and generally well worth the extra cleanup time...
