Functional Fashion with Box Appetit’s Cool Lunchbox

Posted by: Meg In: Lunchbox Products

box-appetit-lunchbox Good design was definitely in place when London design firm black + blum created their box appetit lunch box.  Best for college students and working professionals, their sleek new lunchbox is cool enough to be in New York’s Museum of Modern Art catalog (visit momastore). The lunch box has two main compartments and a sauce container, although the inner container may be removed if your lunch of the day consists of a main dish alone. The thing I love most about this lunchbox?  It is leak-proof… so you don’t run the risk of frying your computer hard drive with the soy sauce you brought for your lunchtime sushi :) adult-lunch-box

The box appetit lunchbox is made of polypropylene and copolyester, both of which are BPA free.  The standard lunchbox includes sauce pot, inner dish and fork.  The black + blum web site states that their lunchbox is microwave and dishwasher safe.  However, based on all the controversy over heating plastics in the microwave I always err on the side of safety and heat items in glass.  For simplicity, I always pack lunchboxes that may be served at room temperature, so reheating is not an issue …

box appetit is well sized for a healthy lunch. Based on the compartments you could either remove the inner lunchbox compartment and put in a full sandwich, or you could keep the divider in and opt for a half sandwich plus side dish. The small sauce container is great for keeping your salad dressing or soy sauce separate from the rest of you lunch so you don’t endlunchbox-tote up with a soggy mess at lunchtime. For those with big appetites a whole fruit or side of trail mix could be brought along separately for a more hearty lunch.

I find box appetit to be functional, trendy, and well priced at $22. Their accompanying lunch box tote ($7) is great, too, with Velcro sides that allow you to open the lunch bag to use as a placemat. The lunchbox and tote come in great colors, including Lime, Black, and Orange. Their lunch box revolution recipe book ($8) has many asian inspired recipes that are nutritious and mouthwatering. Look here to see some of this delicious food served in the box appetit lunch box.

For other great design ideas and gifts, you should check out other black + blum products or enjoy the eye candy and holiday gift ideas from the MoMA store.  If you already have a box appetit lunch container or decide to get one, please let us know what you think about it!

I love my Box Appetit Lunchbox. I use it everyday. I have gotten rid of all the other containers that I had lying around the kitchen. It is the perfect size for a good healthy lunch. It fits great in my backpack and is easy to open and doesn’t spill. I also have the bento box witch is great for midday snacks at my desk. Both are much more cost effective in the long run since I was spending up to 12.00 a day on lunch and a snack.

Clifford, I’m glad to read you are enjoying your Box Appetit lunchbox. I definitely agree that the initial investment on a good waste-free lunchbox is well worth it and pays for itself in a few short weeks or months. Plus, it does wonders for the environment and allows you to eat healthier meals from home. Box Appetit is very nicely designed, too… would be a great lunchbox for working professionals and college kids. Thanks for visiting my lunchbox blog and hope to see you back again soon!

I bought 2 of these last weekend and my husband and I have used them twice and already they’re broken. On the first use my husband’s dressing leaked everywhere, including outside the box. My knife part of the fork broke when cutting into a piece of relatively soft fruit. On their second outing my dressing and exterior box leaked all over my bag and papers and my husband’s clip part of the lid snapped off of its own accord while in the fridge, rendering the whole thing completely unusable. Shoddy, cheap crap at a price that would buy 4 or 5 reliable pieces of tupperware. Absolute con.

I was pleased to receive this as a gift from my partner. Unfortunately however the clips that hold the lid on broke very quickly and now the box is useless.

Reading other reviews online it seem this is actually a common problem and the item cannot be expected to last during normal use. A pretty, but novelty, item.

I’ve had my B+B bento box for about a month, and like Claire, the clips have broken & it’s useless. I’ll be going back to cheaper snap-lock boxes – I don’t feel so cheated when those break after 6 months of solid use!

I am sorry to read that several of you had had problems with the clips breaking on the Box Appetit lunchbox. During the time we used the lunchbox for my product review, I packed the lunchbox for my elementary school age daughter for a couple of weeks and had no problems with it. However, perhaps the problems that some of you are encountering with the lunch box clips will be remedied for a new lunch container from black+blum company. They have an extensive product line of visually appealing and functional items, and perhaps some changes in the design of their bento lunch clips could alleviate the problem. Thanks to all of you for leaving comments so that others can learn from your experience.

About

I'm Meg, a stay home Mom of 3 interested in promoting healthy, low waste lunches for kids and grownups. I aim to present good recipe ideas for packed lunches and to analyze lunchbox products currently available. I encourage involving your kids in all aspects of food. From gardening, to nutrition, to enjoying recipes and making some up... there is a lot to learn and enjoy. Cooking with kids in the kitchen is both spectacularly messy and fun, and generally well worth the extra cleanup time...

If you have an idea for this website or would like to contribute an article to my blog, please contact me! I am also happy to review products if you would like to send me a sample. I am always looking for new information, products, and ideas to keep lunchtime fun and healthy.
