Tetris Blocks: An Easy Bento Lunchbox

Tetris Lunch Box

Tetris Lunch Box

Some bento boxes you see online can be very intimidating!  Since I am someone lacking both time and artistic talent, I like to come across bento boxes that seem within my reach of accomplishment. This bento box imitates the popular Tetris video game and seems like a great and cute bento idea that would also be easy to make.

In this version, the bento box creator used a layer of white rice.  She then cut geometric shapes out of tomatoes, carrots, yellow pepper and cucumber to create a Tetris video game scene in the lunchbox.  The creation is very colorful and healthy when paired with the other bento layer which includes almonds, dried fruit and vegetables.

Video Game Bento Boxes

Video Game Bento Boxes

There are dozens of more video game based bento boxes out there (for instance, search on Flickr).  Some of these video game bento lunches get quite complex as you can see at the picture to the right.  The great thing about bento creations, though, is you can pick your passion and create unique lunches at any skill level.  Even the simplest of bento boxes can be cute and fun to make and eat.

If you have created a bento box you would like me to feature on my site, please contact me and send a picture to share.

I am also intimidated by very intricate bento boxes. Maybe intimidated isn’t the right word…um, maybe I’m more puzzled by them? I’m a busy mom of 4 kids and often have three lunches to pack in the morning, so packing our bentos is a streamlined process the majority of the time. It’s important to me that the kids have a healthy variety of foods, and I think it’s important to *them* that their food be visually appealing. Luckily those two goals can be achieved pretty simply with a little practice. :) I can now get a bento lunch packed in under ten minutes and I’m usually pretty pleased with the results. :)

I am completely impressed with your bentos–readers, please check them out! I’m happy when I get dinosaur sandwiches in there :) So we all need to bento at a level that keeps it stress-free and happy. (Did I just use bento as a verb ??)

Aw, thank you! :) And bento is definitely one of those hybrid words, verb or noun – it’s just fun. :)

About

I'm Meg, a stay home Mom of 2 interested in promoting healthy, low waste lunches for kids and grownups. I aim to present good recipe ideas for packed lunches and to analyze lunchbox products currently available. I encourage involving your kids in all aspects of food. From gardening, to nutrition, to enjoying recipes and making some up... there is a lot to learn and enjoy. Cooking with kids in the kitchen is both spectacularly messy and fun, and generally well worth the extra cleanup time...
