Living on an island here in Hawaii, we are always looking for ways to "reduce, reuse, recycle." The reusable plate idea works for adult picnics too.

Great idea, Doug! I love that their school encourages the kids to earn points in a fun lunch contest. Teaching kids to be eco-responsible can definitely be a fun task. Thanks for posting :)

One idea that has caught on at my son's school is a BYO concept on "hot lunch" days, where kids bring a reusable plate from home and use that rather than the paper plates that are also available. As a parent who regularly pitches in to serve these lunches, I heap praise on the kids with these plates while I'm also heaping food on the plates themselves. In some classrooms, kids who bring their plates from home also earn credits toward a special treat (e.g., pajama day, etc.). If your school serves hot lunches and isn't encouraging kids to bring durable plates from home, spark the idea!
