Love Food Hate Waste? Pack a Lunch Box!

Posted by: Meg In: Lunchbox Ideas

love-food-hate-waste The Love Food Hate Waste campaign is a government sponsored UK program that aims to raise awareness of the need to reduce food waste. Why?  It is estimated that a third of all the food we buy ends up being thrown away–much of which should have been eaten. I was shocked to read that if we all stop wasting food that could have been eaten, the CO2 impact would be the same as taking 1 in 5 cars off the road. Time to break out your lunchbox!

meal-planning With programs in the UK, Scotland, and Whales, the campaign’s website has great information on ways to plan meals, create shopping lists, and utilize leftovers. The result?  Reduced waste, saved resources, and more money in your pocket!

A couple of my favorite tips from the site include 5 Ways to Save Money on Your Food Bill and a handy Portion Calculator. The Love Food Hate Waste campaign provides easy ideas for properly planning meals, and even provides a list of recipes and corresponding shopping list for a two week time period. They also share some great recipes in categories such as Cook Once Eat Twice, Time Savers, and Rescue Recipes, which highlights recipes ideal for using up foods that are past their prime.

I recommend you visit their site, it has a pleasing layout and you will likely learn a few things. If you see any favorite tips or tricks, please post them here!

One idea that has caught on at my son’s school is a BYO concept on “hot lunch” days, where kids bring a reusable plate from home and use that rather than the paper plates that are also available. As a parent who regularly pitches in to serve these lunches, I heap praise on the kids with these plates while I’m also heaping food on the plates themselves. In some classrooms, kids who bring their plates from home also earn credits toward a special treat (e.g., pajama day, etc.). If your school serves hot lunches and isn’t encouraging kids to bring durable plates from home, spark the idea!

Great idea, Doug! I love that their school encourages the kids to earn points in a fun lunch contest. Teaching kids to be eco-responsible can definitely be a fun task. Thanks for posting :)

Living on an island here in Hawaii, we are always looking for ways to “reduce, reuse, recycle.” The reusable plate idea works for adult picnics too.

About

I'm Meg, a stay home Mom of 2 interested in promoting healthy, low waste lunches for kids and grownups. I aim to present good recipe ideas for packed lunches and to analyze lunchbox products currently available. I encourage involving your kids in all aspects of food. From gardening, to nutrition, to enjoying recipes and making some up... there is a lot to learn and enjoy. Cooking with kids in the kitchen is both spectacularly messy and fun, and generally well worth the extra cleanup time...
