The Love Food Hate Waste campaign is a government sponsored UK program that aims to raise awareness of the need to reduce food waste. Why? It is estimated that a third of all the food we buy ends up being thrown away–much of which should have been eaten. I was shocked to read that if we all stop wasting food that could have been eaten, the CO2 impact would be the same as taking 1 in 5 cars off the road. Time to break out your lunchbox!
With programs in the UK, Scotland, and Whales, the campaign’s website has great information on ways to plan meals, create shopping lists, and utilize leftovers. The result? Reduced waste, saved resources, and more money in your pocket!
A couple of my favorite tips from the site include 5 Ways to Save Money on Your Food Bill and a handy Portion Calculator. The Love Food Hate Waste campaign provides easy ideas for properly planning meals, and even provides a list of recipes and corresponding shopping list for a two week time period. They also share some great recipes in categories such as Cook Once Eat Twice, Time Savers, and Rescue Recipes, which highlights recipes ideal for using up foods that are past their prime.
I recommend you visit their site, it has a pleasing layout and you will likely learn a few things. If you see any favorite tips or tricks, please post them here!
