Homemade Trail Mix – Kid Friendly

OK, this one may be a bit of a no brainer.  However, I think it is easy to forget that making your own trail mix is easy and an excellent, healthy addition to a packed lunch.  Almonds and dried fruit are top choices for a healthy trail mix base, but the options are endless.  Including some trail mix in your lunch box gives a protein punch and a spectrum of health benefits.

I start with:

  • 1 cup almonds (raw or roasted)
  • 1 cup dried fruits (cranberries, blueberries, raspberries, raisins, etc… all are great options)

To this I add other favorites including any combination of the following:

  • other nuts such as peanuts, cashews, walnuts, etc
  • M&Ms, miniature chocolate chips, Reece’s Pieces, yogurt covered raisins or another type of sweet treat
  • granola clusters (such as Kashi Go Lean Crunch cereal)

Mix in a large bowl and keep in a sealed container in the fridge. This is a great thing to have around when you need another little something to add to your lunchbox in the morning.

You can also add some “superfoods” such as goji berries (more for adult mix, my daughter doesn’t like ‘em but I do!)

I’ve been trying to make something like this for my son, but he is allergic to peanuts and tree nuts, so we are pretty limited even as far as candy and sweet treats to mix in. The best I have come up with so far is Cheerios, goldfish, craisins and “safe” m&ms when the snack at preschool is GORP. He doesn’t seem to mind!

Would you consider including some info on food allergies and resources for recipes on your blog?

Great suggestion, Priscilla! There are lots of resources concerning allergies, I will put together a list and get a post up… will let you know when it is together. Thanks for visiting!

About

I'm Meg, a stay home Mom of 2 interested in promoting healthy, low waste lunches for kids and grownups. I aim to present good recipe ideas for packed lunches and to analyze lunchbox products currently available. I encourage involving your kids in all aspects of food. From gardening, to nutrition, to enjoying recipes and making some up... there is a lot to learn and enjoy. Cooking with kids in the kitchen is both spectacularly messy and fun, and generally well worth the extra cleanup time...
