OK, this one may be a bit of a no brainer. However, I think it is easy to forget that making your own trail mix is easy and an excellent, healthy addition to a packed lunch. Almonds and dried fruit are top choices for a healthy trail mix base, but the options are endless. Including some trail mix in your lunch box gives a protein punch and a spectrum of health benefits.
I start with:
- 1 cup almonds (raw or roasted)
- 1 cup dried fruits (cranberries, blueberries, raspberries, raisins, etc… all are great options)
To this I add other favorites including any combination of the following:
- other nuts such as peanuts, cashews, walnuts, etc
- M&Ms, miniature chocolate chips, Reece’s Pieces, yogurt covered raisins or another type of sweet treat
- granola clusters (such as Kashi Go Lean Crunch cereal)
Mix in a large bowl and keep in a sealed container in the fridge. This is a great thing to have around when you need another little something to add to your lunchbox in the morning.
